Since the 1960`s the Travel and Tourism Industry has improved dramatically, different things over the years have been made to improve this industry and succeeded. The use of technology has grown rapidly over the years and can be used for near enough everything. For example back from the 1960`s to the early 2000`s as more people have got computers and the internet Travel Agents have gone downhill as it has become more popular to book online holidays instead. Since they introduced the Jet Aircraft in the late 1960`s the amount of people who have decided to travel now has risen a lot. This was introduced as the quickest way from getting to different countries therefore trains and buses went down for getting around especially on holidays.
Changes have been made to Lifestyles and Leisure over a long period of time as there have been laws brought out which mean you can’t get under paid therefore you could always take a holiday as it is the law that you have to have 20 days off so in that time that would mean that you would have more leisure time. As there is now a law which states that you must have 20 days a year off no matter what it is known for people to save these days and have them off all at once which means they can take a holiday whenever they want. Also as many jobs these days have very flexible hours they can have weekends off if they ask to take a break. This means that people have more time to take holidays and travel which is good for the travel and tourism business.
Also the Introduction of the Euro Currency in 1999 was aimed to help people change their money when travelling on holiday to another country. From 1999 there are 17 different countries in the Euro these have been spread out over 6 years. These are the countries that joined the Euro and what year they did.

The Euro has been beneficial to travel and tourism because travellers don't have to change their money into lots of different currencies and it makes it simpler for travellers to understand how much they are paying for things.
Another element that has changed from the 1960 is the use of Technology. Now technology has improved enough that it is now possible to do pretty much anything on the internet. You can now book holidays online including your flights and the whole package including submitting the money from different banks to pay for the holiday you have booked. This has caused Travel Agents to loose alot of business as when wanting to book a holiday you don’t have to go to the Travel Agents as it is available online. This has become a lot more popular as its all free online where as when you book through a travel agents you have to pay a small fee for them to help you. Now that technology has improved to the way it is these days it shows that in the future you will be able to do everything on the internet, therefore this may end up where there are less travel agents about than a few years ago.
The opening of the Channel Tunnel has created a passage for trains and lorries to get through and have access to other places around the UK. It was introduced in 1994 and is 50 killometeres long. There are 2 separate tunnels one for trains to go through and one for trucks and Lorries to get through this helps avoid any collisions. This is known to be quicker than a ferry to France. The channel tunnel has become a very popular way to travel recently as its known for its speed, for example its quicker to get the channel tunnel than any ferries or boats.
The Privatisation of the British Rail was introduced by the end of the 1980`s at first they was in the Public Sector and were owned by the government, but since the 1980`s they have all split up and been put in to separate groups of trains and are now a Private Limited Company. When the Privatisation of the British Rail happened it made railways and the trains a lot cleaner and smarter and more accessible for people to get on and off to different places, this was because they was now working to make a profit and wanted their trains to suceed in making a profit, this would happen as more people will choose to use it. Before this railways wasnt really looked after and less people used them.
The growth of Cruising has grown significantly since the 1960s as it was first seen as only for the rich and famous but now that there are different types of cruises they are available to anyone.Depending on wealth and what type of interests you have, there will be a range of cruieses for tourists to choose from as on every differrent cruise they provide different activities and more importantly to different destinations. They are now the fastest selling holiday now as they have changed parts of them to make them appeal to everyon which has widened their target audience and helped boost their profit. People like cruises as you see different places every day and don’t have to move anywhere as you only have to stay on the ship with your entire luggage. The cruise ships are set up and built for you to take everything on with you. This is seen as a bonus to some travellers as you dont have to waste time going through all the security checks at the airports.
Thomson was the first Tour Operator that sold package holidays. A package holiday is a very popular holiday as it includes your flights and accommodation for your time away for a cheaper price than single flights and accommodation. Package holidays are still very popular and are in fact growing as more airlines have started to provide them. Now that different Tour Operators have seen package holidays are the best seller they all offer package holidays to a range of different destinations. This causes competition between them all so they advertise a range of different deals to try and win more custom. Thomson and First Choice merged together to help reduce costs and improve their profitability as people now seem to book their holidays online as they see it as a quicker way to book it rather than go down to the Travel Agents. As there are so many holiday brochures online the Travel Agents don’t offer that many anymore as this is another way of reducing their costs.
